Artificial Intelligence: Top 5 Myths and Facts

August 12, 2021

Artificial intelligence (AKA deep learning) and machine learning are becoming more and more integrated into existing everyday items and picking up in popularity. With this growing popularity comes a growing sense of panic from those who may not know as much about it. We are here to help dispel some of the most talked-about myths and barriers using facts and research.

Myth 1: AI is going to take away jobs

Fact: AI is going to displace certain jobs and create new ones. According to the World Economic Forum (WEF), “By 2025, new jobs will emerge and others will be displaced by a shift in the division of labour between humans and machines” which will decrease job demand in some job titles such as data entry clerks and secretaries, but create 97 million new job in data analysts, specialists, and other specialty jobs.

This does not necessarily mean employees will be terminated by the dozen—this will mean companies will need to help and allow their employees to reskill and upskill their current skills and knowledge.

Myth 2: AI is smarter than people

Fact: AI can be as smart as you program it to be. There are always going to be people who need to create, teach it, fix, update, and add to the AI. Also, AI can sometimes make faster decisions, but that does not always mean they are going to be the correct one.

Myth 3: AI is or can become sentient

Fact: AI is exactly what it sounds like—fake intelligence. Just because a program can learn certain actions or objectives based on other actions does not mean it is sentient, it means it was programmed to do so. The algorithms do not make a program limitless in all that it learns because even we as humans have limits as to what we can program in the AI.

Myth 4: AI Is an unnecessary luxury

Fact: AI is very accessible to the rich and poor alike. If you own a smartphone, chances are you’ve already used AI. Technologies like Siri, Google Assistant, and Alexa use AI to answer questions and communicate with different systems to, for instance, turn your smart lights on, or give you directions.

Myth 5: My business does not need AI

Fact: According to Forbes, “90% of organizations are using AI to improve their customer journeys, revolutionize how they interact with customers and deliver them more compelling experiences.” You and your business are probably already using AI and you don’t even know it.
Within the security industry, AI is growing more and more in popularity and integration each day. For instance, AI gives us the ability to detect a fallen person or perimeter breach using security cameras paired with the Ganz AI Box or a cloud-based AI solution like GanzCloud.
