June 23, 2022, Cary, NC - Governor Kathy Hochul signed "Alyssa's Law" today, requiring New York school districts to consider installing silent panic alarms to alert authorities directly during emergencies. Many silent panic alarm systems allow schools to bypass 911 and discreetly connect with law enforcement during an emergency.
Alyssa's Law addresses the issue of law enforcement response time when a life-threatening emergency occurs. Alyssa's Law has now been passed in New York, New Jersey, and Florida.
Alyssa's Law is named after Alyssa Alhadeff, a 14-year-old girl who lost her life at the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting. Alyssa Alhadeff's parents have fought to pass the law in New York for three (3) years. In addition, the family's goal is to pass Alyssa's Law nationwide.
The New York City mayor's administration is currently analyzing the Law to see how New York City schools can complement its current safety protocols.
